The Democratic Party Says You’re Un-American

02/22/2013 | News | Campaign News

The Democrats think that you’re un-American.

In fact, they’re questioning the patriotism of the vast majority of Virginians. I think you ought to take umbrage – and I want you to tell them that.

According to Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Charniele Herring, a member of the House of Delegates, photo ID requirements are “un-American.” Someone apparently forgot to tell that to the 75% of Virginia voters who support photo ID – including 95% of Republicans, 78% of independents, and 57% of Democrats.

That’s right, the Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Virginia effectively called the majority of Virginia Democrats un-American!

That includes former President Jimmy Carter, I imagine. After all, requiring photo ID to vote was a recommendation of the bipartisan Carter-Baker Commission Report, with Carter and Baker writing, “The electoral system cannot inspire public confidence if no safeguards exist to deter or detect fraud or to confirm the identity of voters. Photo IDs currently are needed to board a plane, enter federal buildings, and cash a check. Voting is equally important.”

Un-American?

I say that there’s nothing un-American about ensuring the integrity of our elections or shoring up confidence in the electoral process. Chairwoman Herring disagrees, calling the bill “heinous” and claiming that it will disenfranchise thousands, even though under my bill (SB 1256), any voter lacking a valid photo ID can obtain one free of charge. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Democratic leaders can call me whatever they want; I’m used to it. But when the head of the state Democratic Party smears 75% of Virginia voters, I take exception.

Click here to tell the Democratic Party of Virginia that you don’t appreciate being called un-American, and that there’s nothing “heinous” about common sense photo ID requirements at the polls.

The Democrats’ inflammatory rhetoric is a sign of desperation. They know they’re losing badly in the court of public opinion and they’re lashing out. Tell Chairwoman Herring and the Virginia Democrats that you think they owe Virginia voters an apology.

Even as you read this, Democrats are rounding up signatures for a petition calling for Governor McDonnell to veto my Photo ID bill, SB 1256. Let’s show them that the vast majority of Virginians take issue with their desperate attacks. Click here to register your support for SB 1256 and to call upon the Democratic Party of Virginia to apologize for these outrageous assaults on Virginia voters.

Best regards,
Mark
